Mancunian Army of Liberation in Exile (MALE)

Mancunian Army of Liberation in Exile (MALE)

MALE has it’s origins in an attempt by a hodgepodge alliance of various anti-Edward and anti-Mosley groups to attempt to take control of Manchester from the BUF in mid-1937.

The abortive ‘Peterloo Coup’ was rapidly crushed and the survivors mainly fled to Liverpool where the Docker’s Strike was due to lead to the split withEngland. Upon declaration of theFree State and the resulting siege the Manchester veterans were formed a Brigade for service at the front. They were joined by other exiles, Mancunian sailors and ‘turned’ Mancunian POWs which enabled the formation of the an additional ‘Ironside’ Battalion which is used as part of Liverpool’s pool of mobile reserve forces while the Brigade tends to be deployed  at the front lines.

Alongside the Brigade there is also ‘Irregular Companies’ of MALE which are guerrilla bands in the countryside around Manchester and MALE naturally has close ties with various resistance groups in the City. It may well be that the MALE leadership have their own contacts with these bands in addition and on top of the Amalgamated Liverpool Free Intelligence and Espionage Services (ALFIES) operations.

As a force of mixed affiliations the Battalions of MALE are simply numbered.

All companies in the MALE Brigade and Ironside Battalion as lettered with A on within each Battalion or regiment. Irregular Companies tend to have flamboyant names based on their area of operations i.e. the Ridgeway Ramblers operating on the east Cheshire ridge.

Male has no uniform as such – civilian dress is the form though army great coats, gas caps or steel helmets may appear frequently in the ranks. All MALE members wear the red armband of the Worker’s Army (Labour Party) rather than the Liverpool Red-Blue-Green tricolour. This is despite MALE members coming from across the anti-Mosley political spectrum. Typical weaponry is the small-magazine-lee Enfield rifle with Vickers guns and Lewis guns as support weapons.

These are wargames stats 1 stand = c50 men or 3-6 vehicles.
